Chilly Walk

Yes, more snow! Are you all sick of the sight of it yet? As much as I love the snow and how pretty is can look, I hate all the problems it brings with it. I haven't been in the land of blog for a few days and I have found it difficult to get started and inspired by anything this year. I've been too preoccupied with the cold weather. I had a horrible week last week. Getting to work has been a struggle but I did manage to get in every day, although arriving late! Of course you get no thanks for arriving which makes you wonder why you even bothered. January, as you probably guessed, is not my favourite month of the year and the sooner its over the better!
I decided to go for a walk yesterday to try and cheer myself up. The mere in Ellesmere is completely frozen over. This is quite unusual and I think I have only seen it completely frozen a couple of times in my lifetime.
There are lots of migrant birds visiting for the warmer weather! These Canada geese must have got quite a shock when they arrived to this weather.

They get fed regularly by people visiting the mere so as soon as you arrive they swarm around you looking for something to eat.

My garden seems to have survived the worst of it. I have an olive tree outside the back door which amazingly seems to have survived the -14C degree temperature.

The sun came out today which has melted quite a bit of the snow but temperatures still havent risen above freezing. Hopefully I will be in a better mood for my next post! I did notice when walking around the garden that there are lots of daffodils and snowdrops beginning to come through so spring can't be that far away....can it?

  1. Lovely cheery post ...LOL! ;-)
I know what you mean though. It's beginning to become a real pain.
I don't have to go out to work as I work at home...but people have to get to me and I can well imagine that tomorrow they won't be able to...which means altering lessons etc.
Anyway...your post made me smile and I hope you cheer up soon!
    Hugs ;-)

  2. Yes, I'm really fed up with the snow too. I do a round trip of about 28 miles a day for work, and it's not fun.
Glad to hear about the bulbs poking through! Can't wait to see your cottage garden with the spring flowers.
    Keep warm,

    Sharon xx

  3. My school has been closed for three days,(we've had no food delivered for dinners)but we're trying to open tomorrow. Guess what? They're forecasting more snow for us. It's like groundhog day. I hate venturing out on the ungritted roads. Moan...moan!

  4. As long as it's got to be winter, I would rather look at snow than dead brown grass! But I know this weather you're having is extreme. I bet seeing those daffs and snowdrops has given you some hope that spring is just around the corner!
    xo,
    Carol
P.S. Love the picture of your home in winter!

  8. We have TONS of Canada Geese over here in Indiana too. Many of them stay here all winter and our water freezes up too - - - so they must be HARDY birds.

  10. Ellesmere looks lovely frozen over - wonderful photos. The snow is great whilst it is new and if you don't have to go out in it but it is a constant worry when you have to get to work and back every day. You have a super log pile for lots of lovely log fires to keep you warm. Hope this week is better for you, take care:)

  15. I enjoy your photos of the pure white snow, which reminds me of where I grew up. We don't get any snow here where I live in California, so enjoy its cold white beauty!

  16. Oh, my goodness, Susie, you all have gotten a lot of snow. I saw on the weather report where Europe had been very cold. It has been cold here in Central Texas, too, but no snow. I, like you, am so longing for spring and my garden. Stay warm and cozy and hopefully spring will be here soon. Sending love your way! Vicki

  17. It's even been really cold here in GA, but we don't usually have to deal with snow. We had the schools closed one day last week because of icy roads.

Hope your garden comes through the winter well, and you are soon enjoying all those lovely daffodils and snowdrops. :-)

  21. Just dropping by to see how you are doing. I hope everything is good. Too much cold and now mud. This time of year can be a downer. Hope you are enjoying your day. Twyla

  22. I know what you mean, when we had so much snow I was wanting it to go away. Not that it wasn't gorgous to look at, but it was hard to get out of the house, and I felt as if my life style was a bit cramped all of a sudden! Now that there is no more snow, I hate the mud. but, I am able to hop in the car and go where ever I want when ever i want to without worrying over the car slipping and sliding on the ice and snow. Every thing has its good sides I guess. At least you have some sun. the photos are lovely, the geese just fantastic! I heard some fly over just this afternoon. I liked your shadow in the one picture, reminds me of a recent shot that i posted too! :-) Keep smiling. Winter won't last forever. Debby
